Adam Bustamante has eyes like clouds over the sea on a stormy day. How’s that for the start of a bio? Pulls you right in..
I wrote like 12 bios for this show. Some of them were really mean toward artists, others toward the audience. Neither of which was fair, and every time I realized I was just trying to circumvent giving any insight into who I am because I’m afraid. I also realized that, despite my insistence that bios were useless, they do actually serve a pretty good purpose. Obviously, I’m still not doing it how I’m supposed to but I’ll try to cover what I found to be most important.
I was born in Hobbs, grew up in Roswell, moved to Albuquerque when I was 13, and have lived here ever since. I like to paint portraits and figures. I don’t know why. In many ways, I wish I didn’t as it’s a hard subject matter to sell. But it’s what gives me fulfillment so I don’t see deviating from it anytime soon.
I did graffiti when I was younger but didn’t get serious about making art until my mid 20s. It’s basically been an obsession since. I want my paintings to register as realistic, but also include imaginative elements. I prefer to use optical illusions to achieve realism rather than hyper rendering techniques, just a personal preference. My favorite paintings, and the ones that inspire me most, were done between the 16th and 20th centuries. That’s where most of my ideas come from. I don’t actually walk around in Elizabethan collars though, that was just for the photo.
