The Zorn Palette

Color can be overwhelming. We are capable of interpreting endless color variations, and we each see them differently. The Zorn Palette is a way of simplifying this seemingly unmanageable phenomenon. Using only three primary colors and white, Swedish painter Anders Zorn was able to create some of history’s finest paintings.
The first 2 hours of the class include exercises that will allow students to better understand and organize the possibilities of working with a limited color palette. In the final hour, the instructor will give a painting demonstration to show the principles in practice. Students have the option to observe or paint alongside.
Maximum students: 7

As humans, we are endowed with an amazing ability to recognize the most subtle components of a face. This is why it’s so easy to spot a bad portrait. If someone painted a tree branch in the wrong place, no one would ever know. But if you miss the placement of a woman’s lips by 1/8 of an inch, everyone can see that something is wrong.
This class will explain how to simplify the very complicated task of capturing the likeness of the human face. We will also cover some of the common mistakes people make when painting portraits. We’ll begin with a few exercises and move on to a demonstration. The instructor will alternate between demonstrating techniques and offering guidance to students as they work to complete a portrait from life.
